UFI Wraps Up a Successful Week of Events in Maastricht

UFI, the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, recently wrapped up a vibrant week of events in Maastricht, The Netherlands, from June 13-16. Hosted by MECC Maastricht, the gathering brought together industry professionals from across Europe and beyond for a series of significant events, including the European Conference, HR and Operations & Services Forums, the inaugural Event Directors Summit, and the European Chapter meeting.

European Conference Breaks Attendance Records

The European Conference was a marquee event, attracting over 300 delegates—the highest attendance in its history, with many first-time participants. The conference began with a warm welcome from Peter Diez, Director of Limburg Province, at the historic Government House (Provinciehuis), famously known as the site where the Maastricht Treaty was signed.

Held at MECC Maastricht, the conference featured a dynamic mix of panel discussions and break-out sessions. A keynote address by polar explorer and world record holder Ann Daniels was a highlight, offering inspiration through her extraordinary adventures.

Innovative Formats and New Summits

This year’s event introduced fresh elements, including an updated speed networking format and UFI Xchange sessions, where sponsor-driven content was delivered in a TED-style setting. The debut of the Event Directors Summit was another key addition, offering an exclusive event for 50 exhibition or portfolio directors. This summit combined a half-day outdoor program with a half-day workshop, providing a unique blend of learning and networking.

Focused Forums on HR and Operations

Earlier in the week, UFI’s HR and Operations & Services Working Groups hosted specialized forums. These sessions allowed participants to reconnect, share insights, and learn from peers and industry experts. Key themes included innovative approaches to talent retention and recruitment in HR and navigating operational challenges in today’s uncertain environment for Ops & Services. The forums were marked by a rich exchange of ideas, making them truly enriching experiences.

Next Generation Leaders Kickstart Their Project

A notable event during the week was the first in-person meeting of the 2023 UFI Next Generation Leadership (NGL) Grant winners. These emerging leaders began developing a new blueprint for planning and operating events. Their workshop laid the groundwork for their project, which they will present at the UFI Global Congress in Las Vegas. Insights from industry professionals, including jury members and sponsors, were invaluable to the NGLs as they embarked on this important initiative.

Strategic Meetings and Leadership Announcements

UFI’s leadership also held their regular meetings in Maastricht, focusing on strategy, budget, and activity planning. During these sessions, the Board of Directors appointed Hugh Jones, CEO of RX, as the UFI president for the November 2024 – November 2025 term.

Networking and Social Activities

Networking and social activities played a crucial role throughout the week. The UFI Sports Club organized running and cycling events, while delegates enjoyed a walking tour of Maastricht’s historic city center. These social activities, a tradition at UFI regional conferences, allowed delegates to connect in a relaxed environment while exploring the host city.

As the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, UFI continues to organize annual regional conferences across Europe, the Middle East & Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America, alongside the UFI Global Congress. The next major event is the UFI Global Congress, set for November 1-4 in Las Vegas, USA.
